It might also mean you have spent months trying to make your partner do something they do not want to do. The same sentence can describe responsibility—or a task that was never in your hands.

Your Part is a conceptual distinction Ancestrina uses to examine your participation in a relationship: what you do, what you sustain, what you ask for, the boundaries you set, and the decisions you take responsibility for. It does not include controlling another person’s feelings or willingness. Nor does it reduce a couple to two people who never need each other. Some things can only be built together.

Three areas that are easy to confuse

Think of a conversation you want to have. You can propose it, explain why it matters, and choose how to express yourself. You cannot decide whether your partner is willing to listen. And the two of you cannot have a shared conversation if only one person participates.

That reveals three different areas:

What is yours: your proposal, your words, your conduct, and the decisions you can make.

What belongs to the other person: their response, willingness, experience, and decisions.

What is shared: the conversation, agreements, and relational project that require some participation from both people.

This is not a scale for measuring who contributes more, nor is it a clinical model presented as scientifically validated. It is a conceptual map: a way to avoid assigning yourself control where you only have influence, while also refusing to abandon the part where you can act.

Your Part is not limited to visible actions

Your participation also includes what you silently accept, what you promise to avoid an argument, and what you continue organizing as though an agreement existed when it was never actually made.

For example, you may complain that you always have to make the plans while continuing to finalize them before asking because you do not want to wait for an answer. That does not prove that you caused all of your partner’s lack of initiative. It does reveal one of your own behaviors within what is happening.

Or perhaps you say you no longer want to discuss an issue, yet bring it into every conversation through sarcasm. You may be avoiding a direct request while keeping the complaint alive. Seeing that does not invalidate the substance of your frustration; it makes your way of participating more precise.

The question is not, “What flaw in me explains this relationship?” That can become an endless search for guilt. A more useful question is, “What am I doing here that I need to recognize?” It directs attention toward concrete actions rather than a global judgment about who you are.

Asking is also part of your participation

Taking responsibility for what is yours does not mean needing no one or solving everything alone. You can ask for support, affection, information, time, or change. Autonomy does not require you to stop having relational needs.

The distinction becomes clearer when you hear the answer. If a request can only end when the other person gives you exactly what you expected, it increasingly resembles a demand. You can consider what you are asking for deeply important while recognizing that you cannot manufacture the other person’s agreement.

That does not mean every “no” must be accepted as compatible with the relationship you want. Their answer may reveal a difference you need to negotiate, examine, or make a decision about. Your Part includes what you decide in response—not only how politely you made the request.

A boundary describes something you will do

“I do not want you to speak to me that way” expresses an objection or a request. “If the insults begin, I am going to end the conversation” describes an action of your own. Neither sentence acquires magical power merely because you call it a boundary.

It is worth asking whether you can sustain what you announce, what consequences it carries, and whether you are protecting an important condition or punishing the other person until they comply. A boundary affects both people, but its value is not measured only by whether it succeeds in changing your partner.

There may also be material limits on your ability to act. Financial dependence, caregiving responsibilities, or a lack of support can make a decision difficult. Recognizing what is yours should not become another way of saying, “If you stay, you are choosing everything that happens.” Some choices are constrained and require resources and support, not a lecture about responsibility.

Responsibility does not mean sole cause—or equal blame by default

Examining how you respond to a behavior does not make you responsible for the other person doing it. If someone lies, the lie does not become a joint creation simply because the relationship has problems.

Likewise, recognizing an interaction does not require dividing responsibility fifty-fifty. There may be significant differences in power, resources, and the ability to refuse. Actions need to be examined for what they are, not artificially balanced so that both people appear equally responsible.

When there are threats or coercion, prioritize safety and specialized support. Reviewing your participation does not mean making you responsible for stopping someone else’s violence.

Ancestrina uses this distinction to expand a person’s capacity to act—not to burden someone who is already being harmed with the additional job of transforming the person causing that harm.

What you cannot do for your partner

You can help arrange an appointment, but you cannot complete your partner’s process. You can explain what hurts, but you cannot guarantee that it will matter to them in the same way. You can repair something you did, but you cannot decide when—or whether—they will trust you again.

This can be frustrating precisely because influence is real. What you do can open possibilities, change a condition, or invite an unexpected response. But influence is not control over the result.

If you change your behavior only to obtain a change from your partner, you may end up evaluating your work through an outcome that does not depend on you: “I stopped insisting and they still do not initiate anything.” Perhaps stopping the insistence allows you to see something important, even if it does not produce the initiative you hoped for.

What can only exist between two people

An agreement cannot be carried out unilaterally. You can honor your commitment, but you cannot also fulfill the other person’s commitment and call that reciprocity. A shared project requires some recognizable form of choice from both partners.

That does not demand identical effort at every moment. During illness, intensive parenting, or a major work transition, participation may be uneven and still be genuinely chosen. What is shared is not defined by accounting symmetry, but by the way that participation is recognized, decided, and reviewed.

Your Part does not mean withdrawing from everything you cannot control. You can collaborate, care, and build. What you cannot do is guarantee on your own that the construction will continue to be shared.

Making a decision includes recognizing its cost

Sometimes you already know what is not in your control, yet keep waiting for an option that involves no loss. Staying may have costs. Changing an agreement may have costs. Ending the relationship, asking for help, or no longer organizing everything for both of you may bring consequences you would rather avoid.

Not every cost means that you are choosing badly. Nor does every cost become an obligatory sacrifice because you love someone. Taking responsibility for a decision includes looking at what you are willing to face and what support you need in order to do so.

You may not know yet. In that case, your participation may consist of acknowledging the uncertainty and seeking information instead of promising a certainty you do not have. Not deciding immediately can also be an honest position when it is not disguised as a commitment that does not exist.

Using the distinction without turning it into a weapon

“That is your part” can be said to respect another person’s responsibility—or to dismiss the effect of your own behavior. If you hurt someone, pointing out that their feelings belong to them does not release you from answering for what you did.

And “do your part” can become another command dressed in Ancestrina’s vocabulary. The distinction loses its meaning if you use it to classify your partner before looking at yourself, or to declare that your needs are always reasonable while theirs are always a burden.

A more useful place to begin is one concrete situation. Separate what you are doing, what you expect your partner to do, and what would require participation from both of you. Then ask which request, action, boundary, or decision of your own is still pending.

The next question depends on where the difficulty appears.
