Communication and conflict in relationships

Not all communication problems are the same problem.

We may return to the same argument again and again, try to talk and end up fighting, feel that our partner is not listening, never find a time to talk, or spend hours talking without anything changing.

Distinguishing what is happening allows for a more useful question than simply, “How can we communicate better?”

  1. 01We keep returning to the same conflict

Why do we keep arguing about the same thing even after discussing it?

  2. 02We try to talk and end up arguing

We cannot talk without ending up in an argument

The problem here is not necessarily returning to the same subject, but that the conversation escalates before it can be addressed. The task is to recognize when the issue gives way to defensiveness, the need to win, or the effort to provoke a reaction.

  3. 03I feel that my partner does not listen to me

My partner does not listen to me: what does that really mean?

  4. 04My partner avoids talking about important things

My partner does not want to talk about our problems: what can I do?

Not talking now may be a pause. Never finding a time to talk leaves the problem with no way forward. You can suggest conditions and make decisions about your limits, but you cannot produce the other person’s participation.

  5. 05We talk a lot, but we remain in the same place

Talking more does not always improve relationship communication

The amount of conversation does not establish its quality. Understanding, asking, negotiating, acting, and deciding require different conversations; sometimes what is missing is not another explanation.

  6. 06We make agreements, but nothing changes

Why do so many relationship agreements change nothing?

Saying yes to end an argument does not mean there is an agreement. This article distinguishes expectations, requests, and commitments that both partners can recognize and take on as their own.
